I can't believe I have yet to do a "Geeking Out Over" post on this TV show. I've been obsessed with it since last year, and for some reason haven't thought to write about it. At least I'm writing about it now though, right? Better late than never.
While this show may at first seem like your typical police/detective drama, I assure you that it's much different than you think. This show has a certain lighthearted quality that makes it far more enjoyable to watch than other shows that touch on the idea of murder. Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries definitely walks the fine line between comedic and dramatic very well. This wonderful balance is why I like the show so much. You get a healthy dose of both happy and anxious feelings, which prevents the show from ever feeling like it's too slow or boring. First, let's get into clothing and sets. The clothing in this show is amazing and so on point. Everyone's wardrobe perfectly fits their character's personality. Phryne's wardrobe is extremely fancy with tons of glittering ornamentation and a flair that only she could pull off so daringly, Jack's wardrobe consists of sensible and well-cut suits, and Dot's clothing is modest to mirror her more shy personality. The shooting locations are also great. Phryne's house is especially noteworthy. Everything just seems to fit the show so seamlessly. Check out some pictures below!
In terms of plot, it tends to follow the same pattern seen in other police/mystery shows: there's one case that the characters focus on, with bits of a season-long plot line appearing at various intervals throughout the season. Even though this kind of pattern might be standard and expected, I find that this show tackles it well without making it seem stereotypical. Is it that it's set in another time period? Or a different country? Maybe it's because the writers are just that good, which is what I'm most inclined to believe. Who knows? Whatever the case may be, I know that I'm definitely never bored when I watch this show. It kind of reminds me in Bones of the way it's structured. It's also similar to it in that you can basically pick any episode and it'll be good without a doubt. It's not essential that you watch everything in order to understand what's going on, but doing that obviously helps you get a better grasp of the full picture.
Now you might be thinking, "If this woman is a self-appointed detective, does she actually have the skills to aid in murder investigations?" The answer is yes, and personally I think this is where the show really shines. The character development delves into a deeper level that I don't think many people expect to see in a TV show. It manages not to paint Miss Fisher as a wealthy woman who is bored with her life and just wants to become a detective because she has nothing better to do. She genuinely cares about the people she encounters and cares about getting justice for the victims of these horrible crimes. Phryne has the background knowledge to effectively aid in investigations and can do just as good of a job as the other policemen on the force. While she does have money, she is someone who will not hesitate to spend it on her family or friends if they need her help. On the subject of character development, she undergoes a slight transformation as a result of the people she encounters, most notably Jack. Jack in particular makes her question her "live life to the fullest" lifestyle that often leads to her risking her life in dangerous situations. Jack also begins changing from a straight-laced, by the books detective into a more loosened-up character due to Phryne's influence. Dorothy however (more affectionately known as Dot), goes through the biggest transformation. Without saying too much, she changes from an extremely shy person into someone far more confident in herself and her intelligence. It's very fun to watch these lovable characters go through such life-changing events and to be along for that ride. Well, that's my whole post for Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. If that doesn't convince you to watch this show, I don't know what will. It's definitely a show worth your time, I guarantee it. Check out Seasons 1-3 on Netflix before Season 4 comes out!
